On Earth, the most common rocks are sedimentary, for education they require the effect of water or wind. But on the surface of the moon, almost all rock breeds are igneous, that is, they were formed as a result of the cooling of the lava, which turned out to be on the surface of our satellite. Recently, scientists have published the first results of studies of the samples of the lunar soil delivered to the land of the Chinese station «Changy-5». What did the Chinese find in these samples? Let’s deal with together.
The name «regite» is most often used to the lunar soil, although this term can be applied to other soils not only on our satellite, but also on Earth, Mars, other planets and their satellites. The regite covers almost the entire surface of the moon with a layer from 4 to 5 meters. In some areas, highlands the thickness of the layer reaches 15 meters.
The formation of the regolith is an extremely long process. Lunar regolit has been formed all the last 4.6 billion years under the influence of various factors. For example, the drops of meteorites of various sizes as a result of crushing and mixing various lunar breeds during the strikes of these most meteorites and other factors. Also, its formation was influenced by the solar wind and galactic radiation, because of this, the regolithis is saturated with neutral gases, some of which can be used in thermonuclear energy.
The lunar primer is very valuable for research by the sample, since it allows scientists to get new knowledge about the origin, geological history and composition of our satellite. Now in the laboratory of lunar samples in the Space Center of Lindon Johnson in Houston, about 382 kilograms of stones, dust, sand and other fragments of geological rocks, which were brought by the «Apollo» missions from 1969 to 1972 were kept.
Interesting fact. The crew of the Apollo-14 mission in 1971 delivered many different samples of the lunar soil from the moon, among which there were 9 kilogram stone, later called «Big Berta». After research, scientists came to the conclusion that a small part of this sample consists of quartz, field spat and zircon. The conditions for the occurrence of these substances on the moon was never, but they were on earth.
This means that «Big Berta» was formed before the formation of the moon itself, but after a large collision, which by theory led to the formation of the Moon. «Big Berta» overcame the earthly attraction and flew into space, where over time the gravity of the moon pulled it to him. Therefore, it turns out that Apollo-14 astronauts brought a piece of land from the moon.
Now China has become the third country in the world, after the USSR and the United States, which delivered fragments of the lunar soil from the surface of the moon. Back in December 2020, the Chinese Moon Mission «Changy-5» brought with him 2 kg of lunar soil. The Changj-5 module landed on the moon in the ocean of storms — the area, which no one was examined by any mission. And recently, the Chinese have published the results of the study brought fragments.
According to the results of the study of Chinese scientists, about 90% of fragments turned out to be a regolic and basalt of lunar origin. And 10% are fragments of a completely different chemical composition. In the samples found fragments of micrometeorites, fragments of glass of volcanic origin, various kinds of minerals and rocks.
